1.Characterizing a Detached Argumentative Style: Text Types as Presentational Choices, by Professor Mao Haoran, published in Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 1, 2021.
Abstract: This study is a contribution to the recently introduced notion of argumentative style (van Eemeren 2019) in the framework of the pragma-dialectical approach. It aims at characterizing a detached argumentative style, by focusing on a speech event pertaining to the communicative activity type organizational discourse, a report on EU environment and climate change policies. The analysis concerns the executive summary and the key findings of the report, reconstructed in the analysis as the concluding stage of the critical discussion corresponding to the pragma-dialectical model. The notion of text type (Adam 1992) used in the analysis has allowed a more finegrained characterization of the detached argumentative style, especially since the communicative practice under analysis displays a specific discourse format and structure for reasons of conventionalization and institutionalization. In such circumstances, determined by the type of conventionalization imposed by the context,the adoption of a detached argumentative style appears to be a prerequisite. In the concluding stage of a critical discussion the difference of opinion is not restated, while the most significant standpoints are synthetically (re) presented by an adequate balance of narrative, descriptive and metadiscursive text strategies meant to support the objectivity, the conciseness of the presentation and also ensuring the necessary density of information required in a report summary or the presentation of key findings, respectively. While explicit negative evaluations or formulations of standpoints are avoided, the recommendations are presented as open to adoption or reconsideration by policymakers.
2.Translators’ Differentiated Subjectivity Presented in Paratexts—A Descriptive and Comparative Study on the English Versions of Deer and Caldron and Legends of Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, by Associate professor Han Shuqin, published in the 6th issue of Journal of PLA University of Foreign Languages in 2020.
Abstract: Translation, which is regarded as a semiotic communicative activity fulfilled by translation behavior, is bound to reflect the translator’s subjectivity. Based on descriptive analyses of paratexts of the translated English versions of Deer and Caldron and Legends of Condor Heroes: A Hero Born respectively by John Minford and Anna Holmwood, this study attempts to figure out the differentiation between translators’ subjectivity of the scholar-translator and the commercialized translator.Through comparison, the study concludes three aspects of differences. Firstly, there exist differences in selection of source texts and publishing presses. Moreover, the comparative analyses of their epitexts manifest the different levels of self-identification in his or her own translation and the different evaluation focus from other reviewers or studiers. Also the comparative analyses of their peritexts demonstrate the two translators’ differentiated subjectivity in terms of visibility and invisibility, activity and passivity, “act of behavior” and degree of “thick translation”
3. The Theoretical Basis and Research Methods of Multimodal Discourse Analysis, by Doctor Sun Miao, published in Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, Vol.10, 2020.
Abstract: In multimodal language analysis of data, the analysis of Linguistic data according to the elements of interest, combined with the content of the criteria for the evaluation of discourse analysis, to determine the analysis of discourse assessment. In discourse analysis, it is necessary to have discourse as a base object, and analyze its goals and the relationship between the goals of people, taking into account the actual needs of language use. In fact, linguistics, as well as philosophy, the two are interrelated and mutually supportive. The application of discourse has certain limitations, focusing only on the linguistic system, the structure itself and its cultural differences, ignoring the expressions under other senses. It is necessary to pay attention to the generation of multimodal discourse, analyze its specific definition, its nature and theoretical basis, and determine the ways, methods and meanings of multimodal discourse in accordance with the analytical criteria of multimodal discourse.
4.The Practice of MOOC in College English Teaching, by Zhang Qi, published in China Education Daily on October 29, 2020
Abstract: Taking China University of Petroleum as an example, this paper discusses the characteristics of MOOC education and its significance in college English teaching. As products of Internet and Education, high-quality teaching videos benefit the vast majority of teaching groups without time and space barrier. Abundant course resources, openness and interactivity entitle MOOC some advantages, including immediate interaction and guidance between teachers and students and timely monitoring of learning progress in college English teaching, which would to some extent solve the problems and overcome the drawbacks of traditional college English teaching. In recent years, the School of Foreign Studies of China University of Petroleum has actively expanded its thinking, carried out reform and innovation from curriculum to teacher training, and applied MOOC to college English teaching, which injected innovative vitality into college English education.
Since the second half of 2020, based on the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and inclusive development, the school has made every effort to promote the modernization of governance and focused on quality, efficiency and driving power. At the same time, the school is committed to improving its scientific research ability of the faculty, enhancing ability on both teaching and scientific research, fostering new opportunities amid challenges and making new advances and changes, through a series of influential academic forums, lectures and a package of systematic incremental reforms.
