In order to assist the online teaching of college English and enhance the college students’ interest in English learning and self-study ability during the epidemic period, the “Foreign Language Education Press · Glossary Talent Cup” college students English vocabulary contest was hosted by Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Colleges and Universities of Shandong Province and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press.
The in-school competition was hosted by the School of Foreign Studies and mainly covered the first and second year non-English major students in our school, with a total of 3256 students participating. The contest consists of seven types of question, including word spelling, word selection, word matching, etc. Through the online examination, it aimed to test the contestants’ mastery of CET-4 and CET-6 vocabulary. After fierce competition in the preliminary and semi-finals, the 20 students who won the first prize were qualified to enter the provincial finals.
The final was held on May 30, lasting 2 hours, putting an end to the 50-day contest. The results were published on June 3 on the official account of the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. Four students (including Xue Yanhui etc.) from UPC won the Second prize, three students (including Wang Zijian etc.) won the Third prize, and five students (including Xie Yusi etc.) won the Winning prize. Ni Hao, from Automation Class 1902, said after getting the prize, “For vocabulary learning, we must focus on daily work and apply the learned vocabularies in daily lives, so that we can keep them firmly in mind.”
The School of Foreign Studies attached great importance to this competition. They timely published competition notices, and mobilized teachers to encourage students to proactively participate in the competition as well as examining English learning during the covid-19 pandemic. Highly praised by the organizing committee of the competition, UPC won the Excellent Organization Award. We will continue promoting English teaching, putting forth the development of foreign language competitions, and providing more platforms of foreign language competition for students. By using innovative ways, this competition successfully enhanced students’ interest in English learning and cultivated students’ self-learning ability.
