On December 27, hosted by the Graduate School and the Party Committee Graduate Affairs Department, undertaken by the College of Pipeline and Civil Engineering and the College of Arts, co-organized by ASME UPC student branch, the final of I share·2018 Academic English Presentation Contest (AEPC) was successfully held in 301 auditorium. Professor Liu Gang, Associate Dean of the College of Pipeline and Civil Engineering, and Professor Wang Xinbo, Associate Dean of the College of Arts attended the competition and delivered speeches. Wang Xinbo, Guo Yueqin, Zheng Lin, Wu Xuefeng, Sun Jiping, and Scott, teachers of the College of Arts, were invited to be judges. English enthusiasts from all departments of the university watched the competition.
After nearly two months of preliminary and semi-finals selection, a total of 14 students entered the finals of the 2018 AEPC. The final was divided into two parts: speech presentation and questioning of the judges. The judges made a comprehensive evaluation from the speech content, pronunciation, body language and other aspects of the contestants, and finally gave the total score. The competition showed the high professionalism of the players for the contestants vividly displayed and explained the cutting-edge knowledge, professional researches and new engineering technology, covering the latest development of graphene, bitcoin transaction, cloud computing and its applications in life, bringing to the audience a wonderful feast. In the face of a series of thought-provoking questions put forward by the judges, the contestants are quick in thinking and astute with graceful performance. The wonderful answers draw applause and cheers from the audience. In the end, Yuan Zhou and Zhou Lingyu won the Grand Prize. Li Chaofang and Xue Xin and other two students won the first prize. Xu Yiqiu and Zhang Yifan and other six students won the second prize.
After the competition, professor Scot gave full affirmation to the performance of the contestants. Professor Guo Yueqin pointed out that the successful completion of the AEPC is the result of great support and hard work of the leaders and teachers of the schools and department and sent special thanks to Song Cunyong and other students of the ASME UPC student branch of the College of Pipeline and Civil Engineering for their hard work. This competition is an important reform of basic foreign language teaching for postgraduates in our school. It strengthens the language use and practical ability, improves the enthusiasm of postgraduates in learning English, as well as promoting the internationalization of postgraduate English teaching, which contributes to the double first-class construction of our university and strengthens the foundation.
