The College of Artsinvited Zhang Wei to deliver a lecture titled “ How to Tell a Story?--Creation and Conception of Literature”on September18thfor the 13th Boya Lecture Hall. Prof.Zhang Wei is Vice Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association, and Chairman of the Shandong Writers Association. Campus also attended the lecture.
Prof.Zhang mainly tackled two questions during the lecture: “How to deal with relationship between skills and inspirations ” and “How to integrate western literary theory into writing a literature with Chinese characteristics”.
He convinced students that skills are of vital importance and unaccustomed mistakes in vocabulary, syntax and punctuation, etc. should certainly be a trouble. He explained why skills matter so much in that “ An excellent literary works is often born from an inspiration, a transcendence from a certain stage of life, how lucky when it met craftsmanship.”
Moreover, Prof.Zhang advocates that college students should read more, read good and learn from other mature literary works.
He reminds us that western literary theories cherish reason, while Chinese literary works value sensation. We should look at them in a dialectical way and should not take a denial attitude towards any party.
Finally, Prof.Zhang expressed his good wishes to the students that “Literature is a kind of flying thoughts, something romantic. So love the truth, love the art, work hard, and enjoy the beauty of literature.” His words upgraded our understanding about story-concocting skills and literature aesthetics.
